Prepare to Network

Networking is a great way to get to know others who are working in the field you’re
interested in transitioning to. Meeting people at industry association events or
through alumni connections gives you opportunities to ask for an informational
interview. It’s also a good way to make contacts who may keep you in mind when they are hiring.

Not quite sure how to network? There are many books to give you tips and
conversation starters.

Identify Associations

Professional associations often offer student membership rates, and can help you make contacts in your target industry and function. Meeting with alumni and other contacts in your industry and function of interest can give you an advantage when applying for jobs, and help demonstrate your interest in the industry.

Develop a Target List

Create company lists by industry or location to help you focus your job search. You can cross check this list against the Alumni Directory or the ECN as you network.

Book of Lists

  • Career Ref: 60 US Metro areas available
  • Search the Euclid catalog for your city’s availability
  • Many include lists of top area recruiters and executive recruiters

Hoover's

  • Hoover's provides information for over 18 million public and private companies.
  • Company reports include fact sheet, key people, products/operations, industry, competitors
  • Click the "make a list" icon on the home page to create a targeted list.
  • Limit by geography, industry, company size, sales, and many other criteria.

Dun and Bradstreet Million Dollar Premium

  • Create lists of from over 2 million U.S. public and private businesses (including companies with 1M+ sales or 20+ employees)
  • Information includes type of ownership, primary and secondary SIC codes, number of employees, amount of sales, names of principal executives and executive biographies.
  • Export to excel to customize this list further.

Business Chronicles

  • If you have a geographic area of focus, make a practice of reading your area's business chronicle. This is a great way to stay current on events impacting the business community.
  • THe chronicle's also often list key promotions and new hires, which can also help locate contacts and identify firms you may be interested in.
  • Many of the chronicles, including the Atlanta Business Chronicle, offer free daily or weekly news updates delivered to you via e-mail: an easy way to stay on top of the key headlines!

Special Issues: Gary Price's List of Lists

  • You know about the Fortune 500 -- and this site will help you identify additional company rankings. Many industry and trade publications rank companies in their own special issues.
  • Lists include Annual 100 Best Corporate Citizens, Fortune 500, Fastest Growing Small Companies, Top Software Developers, Top 100 Funds, etc.

Detailed Industry and Company Information

Research the industry and company prior to informational interviews and networking events. These resources provide PDF reports on both companies and industries that you can review before any meeting.

Marketline Business Information Center

  • Contains substantive profiles of 10,000+ U.S. and international public and private companies, 2500 industries and 100 countries
  • Profiles include business description, history, major products and services, locations and subsidiaries and links to top competitors
  • The 1000 largest company profiles also include a SWOT analysis

S&P NetAdvantage

  • Locate in-depth industry overviews for 52 industries
  • Identify key financial and competitive analysis of 7,000 public companies
