Networking is a great way to get to know others who are working in the field you’re
interested in transitioning to. Meeting people at industry association events or
through alumni connections gives you opportunities to ask for an informational

Professional associations often offer student membership rates, and can help you make contacts in your target industry and function. Meeting with alumni and other contacts in your industry and function of interest can give you an advantage when applying for jobs, and help demonstrate your interest in the industry.

Develop a Target List
Create company lists by industry or location to help you focus your job search. You can cross check this list against the Alumni Directory or the ECN as you network.

- Hoover's provides information for over 18 million public and private companies.
- Company reports include fact sheet, key people, products/operations, industry, competitors
- Click the "make a list" icon on the home page to create a targeted list.
- Limit by geography, industry, company size, sales, and many other criteria.
Dun and Bradstreet Million Dollar Premium
- Create lists of from over 2 million U.S. public and private businesses (including companies with 1M+ sales or 20+ employees)
- Information includes type of ownership, primary and secondary SIC codes, number of employees, amount of sales, names of principal executives and executive biographies.
- Export to excel to customize this list further.
- If you have a geographic area of focus, make a practice of reading your area's business chronicle. This is a great way to stay current on events impacting the business community.
- THe chronicle's also often list key promotions and new hires, which can also help locate contacts and identify firms you may be interested in.
- Many of the chronicles, including the Atlanta Business Chronicle, offer free daily or weekly news updates delivered to you via e-mail: an easy way to stay on top of the key headlines!
