AM Best Company  
the most authoritative rankings company for insurance companies. The rankings are based on their financial strength, and their ability to meet policy holder obligations. Generally, any company with at least a B ranking is acceptable. However, be aware that A is not the highest, AM Best also offers an A+ and an A++ for the strongest companies.

Best's Review includes a variety of rankings for companies in each issue, browse or search this magazine in ABI/Inform to see other lists.

Associations

Search Associations Unlimited to identify the many associations focused on the insurance industry. These sponsor many conferences throughout the year that provide excellent networking opportunities.

Most insurance professionals seek industry designations to enhance their understanding of their industry and specialty, as well as standing among clients and customers.

These designations are awarded by colleges and associations and can also be good starting places to learn about careers in the insurance industry.

Their web sites also offer a variety of career and networking resources.

American College       
The American College is a fully accredited, non-profit college focused on the financial services profession. It offers degrees such as the Masters of Science in Financial Services and prestigious industry designations such as the Chartered Life Underwriter, and Chartered Financial Consultant.

LOMA
LOMA is an international association with membership including over 1,200 insurance and financial services companies. This association provides a variety of research reports and services, as well as educational opportunities for its members. It offers professional designations focusing on topics such as life insurance, financial services, annuities, management, reinsurance, compliance, underwriting, etc.

American Institute for CPCU and the Insurance Institute for America
The Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter designation, awarded by AICPCU is a highly respected designation focusing on issues in property casualty insurance lines. The society also offers several general insurance designations for those new to the profession.

Career Guides

Insurance careers include roles in both commercial or personal insurance. They generally split between property/casualty or life/health. There are a variety of opportunities in insurance companies, from actuarial to marketing.
