Careers in Internal Consulting-- Understanding Your Career Choices
Ultimately, consultants are repositories of pure intellectual capital. Their most important asset is their ability to use past knowledge and generate new intellectual capital through rigorous thinking and careful research. What Are Your Roles as an Internal Consultant?
- Willing to take the risk of changing roles in the organization
- Cultivate the strategic and informational alliances within the organization necessary to perform effectively
- Accept the view that role changes will bring about better processes and improved outcomes
- Re-define your role in the organization for the benefit of the rest of the organization
- Begin thinking of your co-workers and management as clients who can (and do) look elsewhere for the services you provide
- Approach your job as if you were starting your own consulting business
What Differentiates Internal and External Consultants?
- The IC already understands the organization; the external consultant does not
- The IC understands the climate and culture of the organization; the external consultant will have to observe, note, and find out for himself
- The IC has a personal stake in the outcome of the work; the external consultant sees it as another in a long list of client business relationships
- The IC has specific knowledge of the company's products, processes and market; the external consultant will have to develop that knowledge
- The IC has to live with the engagement results once they are done; the external consultant can just moves on
