A thorough understanding of the real estate industry is even more important than location, location, location.  To be successful, you must acquire a broad knowledge of the industry, knowledge of a regional market and awareness of industry trends and events.   Several books, periodicals, and recommended search strategies for our Databases are listed below, covering several aspects of the real estate industry.

Industry insiders know the importance of knowing the regional market. Stay abreast of deals and opportunities by regularly reading industry periodicals, the Wall Street Journal and your regional business publications.

It is important to stay abreast of industry news.   The library's Databases will enable you to piece together information about recent transactions and locate valuable networking information.

Factiva

Full-text coverage of more than 9,000 business publications; comprehensive company and industry information. Factiva is designed so you can narrow your resources by Region and further narrow using free text.

Limit sources by industry; click on Industry and Industry Lookup to select the area of interest.

Limit sources by region; click on Region and then the plus sign in front of the Region of interest. Once the search is narrowed down, click on the Region name and it will drop into the search.

Try different search terms in the Free text box:
(investment banking and real estate)
(real estate investment trust* or REIT*)
(apartment or multifamily) and real estate
(apartment or multi-family or multifamily or condo) and (atleast2 broker or atleast2 deal or atleast2 transaction)

Nexis.com

Similar to Factiva, Nexis.com provides access to both national and regional real estate news. 

To browse the current day’s articles from major national and international papers use the subject directory on the Nexis.com home page – select Real Estate and Rental & Leasing. 

You can also search for articles, using periodicals based on geography or subject.

Geographic Search: Underneath the search box click: Find More Sources > News > By Country and Region > United States.  From there, you can select collections of journals covering broad regions or specific states. 

Subject Search: Alternatively, browse sources available in the Nexis Real Estate file, Find More Sources > News > By Industry and Topic > Real Estate
